24 and 31 January 2010
With the season a little more than a month away for some, it has started for others. Attendance at the skill sessions has continued to pick up and as usual the 7/8 program and the high school lead the pack. I appreciate seeing some of the same smiling faces knowing that these boys are improving with each session. Keep it up gentlemen!
As some of you may know, last month, coaches Tom Wehe, Steve Saunderson, and I traveled back east to attend the US Lacrosse National Convention in Baltimore. It was a great opportunity to meet other coaches from around the country and to learn new techniques and tactics. Considering I had the pleasure of watching coach Tom introduce the "Saints Drill" he learned at one of the sessions he attended and coach Steve sharing his knowledge of goal keeping exercises, I'd say it was club money well spent. Nice job coaches!
Two Sundays ago we had an unfortunate incident wherein a young man thought he was experiencing an asthma attack. He did not have his inhaler with him. Parents it is imperative that we as coaches have knowledge of your son's medical conditions and as in this case, a spare inhaler appropriately labeled with your son's name in our first aid bag. Also, please make sure that you answer your cell phones so that we can inform you of any situation.
This past Sunday was particularly enjoyable. The rudiments of several offensive sets were introduced to all of the boys. Under the enthusiastic and encouraging coaching of three high school players who served as demonstrators and instructors all of the 5/6 and 7/8 boys took their turns executing a "Question Mark move" and "a 3-1 High Pick Opposite" play. Hugh thanks go to Liam Watkins, Tanner Champagne and Mike McClellan for your guidance and leadership! By the way, for those of you who happen to watch Duke defeat the US National Team (Sunday evening on ESPNU) you would have seen the "Question Mark move" beautifully executed resulting in a goal. The commentators sure loved it.
There will be no Sunday Skill Session this Sunday-Super Bowl Sunday (7 February '10)! Enjoy the game and keep a stick in your hands. This is a perfect opportunity to practice "switching hands" (place a rolled up sock in your stick pocket) and cradle. Switch hands like a Musketeer would sheath his sword. You know what I am talking about. Have fun.
